And he concocted this <a href=\"http:\/\/bentobjects.blogspot.com\/2011\/05\/at-crossroads.html\" target=\"_blank\">still-life<\/a> at the behest of his publisher. Yep, a book publisher asked for a sculpture that showed eReaders zooming way beyond printed books&#8230; anyone else see the &#8216;huh?&#8217; in that??<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it is the contents of books that we crave &#8211; the drama, the emotion, the relationships, the information, the humor &#8211; and sometimes the container doesn&#8217;t matter at all.<\/p>\n<p>If I&#8217;m looking for a map of the Lewis and Clark Trail, I don&#8217;t care if it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lewisandclarkexhibit.org\/index_flash.html\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a>, in a National Park Service <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/lecl\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">guide<\/a>, or in a library book. <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve read numerous books in bite-sized pieces delivered to my email by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailylit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Lit<\/a>, as Advance Reader Copies through NetGalley, and in whole works through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\" target=\"_blank\">Project Gutenberg<\/a> (and have even helped proofread some new digitizations there).<\/p>\n<p>But our brains just don&#8217;t read text on the screen the same way that they read text on a page, <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/cortex\/2009\/10\/reading_e-books_and_the_brain.php\" target=\"_blank\">according to researchers<\/a>, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomaslarson.com\/publications\/criticism\/211-this-is-your-brain.html\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Larson<\/a> notes in his overview of several recent books and studies on the two methods of reading. <\/p>\n<p>I still love print books best for fiction, curled up in my chair, with a cat or two on my lap. No batteries to run down, no cords or mice (sorry, kitties), no overheating (laptops can be lapscorchers). The tactile experience of <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/blogs\/brainstorm\/screen-readingprint-reading\/8551\" target=\"_blank\">turning the pages<\/a> of a book contributes to our reality of the reading experience.  <\/p>\n<p>I like real.<br \/>**kmm<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Terry Border makes weird things &#8211; Bent Objects, to be exact.
