{"id":284,"date":"2011-06-19T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-06-19T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/booksyalove.com\/?p=284"},"modified":"2011-06-19T14:00:00","modified_gmt":"2011-06-19T14:00:00","slug":"happy-fathers-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/booksyalove.com\/?p=284","title":{"rendered":"Happy Father&#8217;s Day!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since my dad is (a) driving with Mom somewhere in Canada with the cellphone off, (b) doesn&#8217;t get online at all (but does ask us kids to look up things when visiting), and (c) probably doesn&#8217;t know exactly what a blog is, I&#8217;ll still wish him <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/fathers-day\" target=\"_blank\">Happy Father&#8217;s Day<\/a> here as we look back at some fictional fathers in recent BooksYALove recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>In YA books, dads can often be a cipher, just kind of a placeholder while Mom is the key figure &#8211; try <i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/05\/ten-miles-past-normal-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ten Miles Past Normal<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/05\/stolen-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Stolen<\/a><\/i> for father-who&#8217;s-there-but-barely. Other times, Dad has to fill both parental roles (<a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/05\/zen-xander-undone-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Zen &#038; Xander Undone<\/i><\/a> -not so well, and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/05\/i-love-him-to-pieces-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">I Love Him to Pieces<\/a><\/i>, much better).<\/p>\n<p>Some are adoptive fathers as in <i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/05\/dogtag-summer-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dogtag Summer<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/06\/heart-of-samurai-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Heart of a Samurai<\/a><\/i>, while others are fathers no longer in the child&#8217;s home, like <i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/06\/this-thing-called-future-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">This Thing Called the Future<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>We have bumbling-yet-well-meaning fathers in <i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/05\/kat-incorrigible-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kat, Incorrigible<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/06\/visconti-house-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Visconti House<\/a><\/i>, then trying-the-best-they-can dads in <i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/06\/what-happened-to-goodbye-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">What Happened to Goodbye<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/06\/astronaut-academy-zero-gravity-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Astronaut Academy<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Plenty of papas are long, long gone, as in <i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/05\/flawless-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Flawless<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/06\/fire-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Fire<\/a><\/i>, while others are rather too involved in their teenagers&#8217; lives (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/05\/awaken-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Awaken<\/a><\/i>, anyone?), as far as the teens are concerned.<\/p>\n<p>Fathers might leave through divorce (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/06\/who-is-frances-rain-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Who Is Frances Rain?<\/a><\/i>) or through death (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/05\/saraswatis-way-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Saraswati&#8217;s Way<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/05\/tricksters-girl-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Trickster&#8217;s Girl<\/a><\/i>), and yet young adults must cope with their changed world, a world with one pair of guiding hands forever gone&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we&#8217;ll find these various sorts of fathers, father-figures, and conspicuous-by-their-absence fathers as we go along on BooksYALove = family is so often a key element in YA fiction.<\/p>\n<p>So, wish a dad Happy Father&#8217;s Day today, even if he&#8217;s not your dad;
