{"id":99,"date":"2012-05-26T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-05-26T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/booksyalove.com\/?p=99"},"modified":"2012-05-26T14:00:00","modified_gmt":"2012-05-26T14:00:00","slug":"advice-to-graduates-all-of-us-reflective-in-which-neil-gaiman-is-quoted-because-he-said-it-best","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/booksyalove.com\/?p=99","title":{"rendered":"Advice to Graduates &amp; all of us (reflective) &#8211; in which Neil Gaiman is quoted, because he said it best"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear friends who are graduating (and everyone else, too),<br \/>I hope you&#8217;ve already seen this video of author Neil Gaiman addressing the University of the Arts Class of 2012 at their graduation. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>I hope you&#8217;ve listened to it more than once, especially if you&#8217;re finishing school (at any level) and are about to go out into the big wide world of work and responsibility and joy and distress and the chance to make a difference.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Make. Good. Art,&#8221; says Gaiman. Even if you don&#8217;t have an artistic bone  in your body, those words are meant for you: whatever it is that you are  passionate about, do it well, and keep on doing it &#8211; through good times or bad, whether it&#8217;s your vocation or avocation.<\/p>\n<p>It may be your &#8220;day job&#8221; which fulfills you (like Maggie in <a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/11\/paper-daughter-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Paper Daughter<\/i><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/11\/paper-daughter-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a>) or something after hours (like Haven in <a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2012\/04\/illuminate-by-aimee-agresti-fiction-h.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Illuminate<\/i><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It may be the first thing you try which makes the biggest impact in the lives of others (like Lex in <a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2012\/04\/croak-by-gina-damico-fiction-m-for.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Croak<\/i><\/a>) or maybe the tenth (like <a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2012\/03\/mercy-fiction-exiled-from-heaven-dreams.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Mercy<\/i><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It may be something that you&#8217;ve studied and trained for which turns out to be your best gift to those around you (like Sage in <a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2012\/04\/f-for-false-prince-by-jennifer-nielsen.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>The False Prince<\/i><\/a>) or perhaps not (like Ismae in <a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2012\/04\/l-for-lamb-to-slaughter-grave-mercy-by.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Grave Mercy<\/i><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I hope you&#8217;ll listen to this talk again when you need a  reminder of what you can do to make the world better &#8211; just one person,  doing whatever it is that you love to do best, finding satisfaction in the  doing, not just the result (like Mitch in <a href=\"http:\/\/booksyalove.blogspot.com\/2011\/11\/payback-time-fiction.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Payback Time<\/i><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Listen well &#8211; Make good art, in whatever manner your talent for increasing the world&#8217;s happiness leads you.<br \/>Whether you&#8217;re a new graduate or older and worldly-wise, remember that every sunrise brings you a new chance to begin to make good art.<br \/>**kmm<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear friends who are graduating (and everyone else, too),I hope you&#8217;ve already seen this video of author Neil Gaiman addressing the University of the Arts Class of 2012 at their graduation.
